===============================================================================
The following is a list of the Norton Utilities files that changed in
LiveUpdate #6, and a description of the changes:
Norton Rescue: Changed files: rescue32.exe, nursc.dll, ziprecvr.exe
Now supports Windows 98 and Windows 95 OSR 2.5.
Can create Zip rescue set on systems where the zip drive
is drive A:.
PCMCIA SCSI cards are no longer supported. This can be
overriden with the /PCMCIA switch.
Norton SpeedStart: Changed files: spdstart.vxd, spdstart.exe
Norton SpeedStart now disables itself on Windows 98.
Norton Speed Disk now directly supports application
launch acceleration provided by Windows 98.
Norton Speed Disk: Changed files: sd32eng.dll
Supports optimizing your drives using application launch
acceleration provided by Windows 98.
Norton CrashGuard: Changed files: Norton Crashguard directory
Norton CrashGuard 3.03 caused Explorer to open folders
called Norton or Programs during startup on certain systems.
This no longer occurs.
Optimization Wizard: Changed file: optwiz.exe
Fixes a rare problem where users may experience Registry
corruption on Windows 98 systems upgraded from Windows 95.
No longer displays option to use Norton SpeedStart on
Windows 98 systems. Refer to Norton SpeedStart section above.
Norton WinDoctor: Changed files: many
Improved versions of scanner components.
SymEvent: Changed file: sevinst.exe
Latest version of symevent files. You can always get the
latest Symevent files from our FTP site at
ftp://ftp1.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/symevnt/
Update #6 also includes the following changes from Update #5 (v3.06):
Norton Disk Doctor: Changed files: ndd.exe, nddeng.dll, ndd32.exe
Updated Disk Doctor to fully perform partition table
diagnosis and repair of drives requiring extended int13
support (drives over 8.4gb).
Fixed a problem where NDD could take a very long time to
initialize on some drive configurations.
Norton Disk Doctor on startup will no longer halt if the
only error found is the free cluster count, but will
silently correct this very minor error.
Norton Rescue: Changed files: iomega.vxd, nursc.dll, rescue32.exe,
ziprecvr.exe
Eliminated files: nureged.exe, runreged.exe
New files: nzrbuild.vxd
Added ability to select or deselect specific
files to be copied to a ZipRescue set.
Added additional instructions for users who have
adapters which are not natively supported by Norton
ZipRescue.
Added support to both Basic Rescue and ZipRescue for
partition table diagnosis and repair of drives requiring
extended int13 support (over 8.4gb).
Added support to ZipRescue for Windows 95 OSR 2.5
(Version 950 C), which comes preinstalled on many new
computers purchased in 1998.
Added support for Windows accessibility options.
Added support for some bus mastering IDE controllers.
Added support for Internet Explorer 4.0 "view as web
page" feature.
Improved the registry handling, eliminating the use of
Regedit and allowing ZipRescue to function with
physically corrupt registries.
ZipRescue Recovery Wizard now supports system area virus
repair.
ZipRescue now supports Zip drives configured as the
system A: drive, making them bootable without a floppy.
Rescue now creates a rescue.log file in the Windows
temporary directory which contains diagnostic
information. Running "rescue32 /log" will display this
diagnostic log.
Norton Registry Editor:Changed files: nregedit.exe
Fixed a problem that might cause search/replace to fail
when replacing a key name.
Norton Speed Disk: Changed file: sd32eng.dll
Speed Disk will now run on some machines on which it
formerly reported that the drive was misconfigured.
Fixed a problem on Win98 machines that could cause
an error allocating cluster error message on some drives
with unmovable files.
Fixed a crash that could occur when working with bad
clusters and unmovable files.
System Doctor: Changed files: sensor32.dll, noem32.dll
New files: navsdr32.dll, navdef32.dll, navsdk.vxd
Norton System Doctor will now use the Norton Antivirus
v4.0 virus definitions by default. If Norton Antivirus
v2.0 is installed, Norton System Doctor will use the
v2.0 definitions. This will enable Norton System Doctor
to maintain the definitions for both Norton Utilities
and Norton Antivirus should both products be installed.
Fixed a problem where Network Associates' VirusScan 3.1,
Norton System Doctor, and Norton Speed Disk, all running
concurrently, could cause a system freeze.
Sometimes System Doctor could report invalid dates with
certain antivirus definition files dated past the 12th
day of the month. This has been repaired.
Fixed a freeze that could occur if you cancelled out of
a NAV SE repair.
The Rescue sensor now updates immediately after Rescue
completes. The sensor also checks to see if Rescue has
been run since the last time System Doctor was run and
updates its state accordingly.
LiveUpdate: Changed files: nuliveup.dll nulive.dll
Now supports updating Norton Antivirus v4.0 virus
definitions as well as Norton Antivirus v2.0 virus
definitions.
System Information: Changed files: si32.exe
Updated Norton System Information to handle hard drives
that require extended int13 support (larger than
8.4gb).
Norton WinDoctor: Changed files: many
Fixed a problem where WinDoctor registry scans could
freeze when searching for deleted files.
On some machines, including those with corrupt
registries or with misinstalled DCOM 95 windows
components, WinDoctor would not show any scans.
WinDoctor will automatically try to resolve the problem
instead of silently failing.
Norton Protection: Changed file: nprotect.exe, nprotect.vxd
Modified Norton Protection to handle a greater number of
file exclusion rules.
If Norton Protection fails to load, it displays a more
helpful troubleshooting error message.
SymEvent: Changed file: sevinst.exe
Fixed a problem where you could get SYMEVNT mismatch
errors causing Norton Protection not to load. The
latest Symevent files can always be retrieved from our
FTP site at
ftp://ftp1.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/symevnt/
Norton CrashGuard: Changed: Norton Crashguard directory
Norton CrashGuard 3.02 has better support for Far
Eastern languages, and fixes a lock up that occurs
intermittently upon system startup.
Update #5 also includes the following changes from Update #4 (v3.05):
Optimization Wizard: Changed file: optwiz.exe
Symantec identified a problem users commonly
encountered using Norton Optimization Wizard:
Many users have physical corruption in their system
registries and Norton Optimization Wizard can't
optimize physically corrupt registries. Due to the
widespread nature of this problem, we added a new
feature to Norton Optimization Wizard: Corrupt
Registry Repair. If Norton Optimization Wizard
discovers that you have a corrupt registry, it
provides the user with a notice to that effect, and
asks the user if the registry should be repaired or
not. If the user does not elect to have their
registry repaired, Norton Optimization Wizard will
be unable to optimize the registry and will abort.
If the user does repair the registry, all invalid
(unreadable through the Windows API) keys will be
pruned from the registry. Should this cause any
problems, the original (corrupt) registry can be
restored via the RESTREG.BAT file, as explained in
the README.TXT file.
Repaired a problem where Optimization Wizard
could crash with a stack overflow message or a
GPF in NRW16.EXE while rebooting after users
upgraded to LiveUpdate #3.
Added a check to Optimization Wizard to prompt a
user to expand their fixed swap file size if it's
smaller than our recommendation.
Fixed a software conflict with First Aid 98's
Windows Guardian during registry optimization.
Optimization Wizard will disable (until reboot)
the Windows Guardian so that it does not track the
optimization being done to the registry (and thereby
prevent Windows Guardian from crashing). More
details may be found in the README.TXT file.
Norton Speed Disk: Changed file: sd32eng.dll
Fixed a problem where Speed Disk would restart
when running continuously on large FAT32 partitions.
Changed Speed Disk to place files in the root
directory with the system attribute immediately
after the "files to place first" (from the Speed
Disk custom configuration).
For users of Windows 98, Speed Disk will now pause
at the beginning of an optimization and display
"Converting Application Start Data" on the status
line. Under Windows 98, some files may actually
be purposefully fragmented in order to be fully
optimized for load speed. Speed Disk works in
conjunction with the operating system to determine
how they should be fragmented, and optimizes them
for peak performance.
Added SAVE2DSK.BIN to the list of Speed Disk
unmovable files.
Norton Protection: Changed file: nprotect.exe, ushellex.dll
Fixed a problem where the Norton Protected Recycle
Bin shield icon may not properly reflect the state
of the recycle bin at all times.
Norton Protection will no longer update the
Norton Protected Recycle Bin shield icon upon
shutdown. This allows systems to shut down
more quickly.
Norton SpeedStart: Changed file: spdstart.vxd
Fixed a problem that could cause crashes in
various applications upon startup.
Norton SpeedStart disposes of old profiles after
30 days. This automatic cleanup is used to
prevent a huge number of profiles from being
stored in the NSS directory. Some applications
which scan files (such as some non-Norton
antivirus products or file search programs), will
update the last accessed date on such files. This
causes Norton SpeedStart to never erase them. Now,
Norton SpeedStart will delete all profiles 30 days
after they have been created and the programs you
still use will be reprofiled every 30 days.
Norton Disk Doctor: Changed file: nddeng.dll
Worked around a conflict with an old version of
the Promise Technologies Ultra 33 UDMA controller
that could cause Norton Disk Doctor to
mis-diagnose a drive problem. This will no longer
cause a problem with Disk Doctor, but users of
these controllers should ensure that they have
version 1.33 (or newer) of the driver. This
driver update is available on the Promise web site
or from LiveUpdate Pro.
System Doctor: Changed files: sysdoc32.exe, sensor32.dll
If Norton System Doctor could not find anti-virus
definitions, it could show a green sensor. This
will no longer occur.
Norton System Doctor should also no longer display
an Antivirus definition date of 1690.
Norton CrashGuard: Changed: Norton Crashguard directory
This version of Norton CrashGuard solves a problem
where systems would sometimes hang on system
startup. There is also an updated README.TXT in
the Norton CrashGuard directory.
Update #4 also contains the following changes from Update #3 (v3.04):
Optimization Wizard: Changed file: optwiz.exe
New file: badkey.ow, restreg.bat
Norton Optimization Wizard has been updated to do
registry optimization much more quickly and more
safely than previous versions. It has improved
error detection, and will abort the process if it
is unable to safely optimize the registry.
If Optimization Wizard is unable to successfully
optimize the registry, a BADKEY.OW file is created
in the Windows directory that contains a list of
defective registry keys. The registry will not
be harmed.
Optimization Wizard also creates a RESTREG.BAT
file in the Windows directory that can restore
the registry to its pre-optimized state.
Optimization Wizard now cleans up its
temporary files after it completes.
Zip Rescue: Changed files: iomega.vxd, nursc.dll, rescue32.exe,
ziprecvr.exe, runreged.exe
ZipRescue has been updated to function with
corrupt registries (Windows can use such
registries, but they can cause problems with
recovery. LiveUpdate #3 solves this).
ZipRescue now excludes more files than in
previous versions (temporary internet files,
wininit.bak, etc). These excluded files are not
necessary for proper ZipRescue functionality.
ZipRescue now includes VxD's included in
system.ini which are needed for some machines.
Fixed a problem where SETVER.EXE does not exist
on some OEM configurations.
Added HIMEM.SYS to Basic Rescue CONFIG.SYS.
Fixed a problem in handling startup files in the
Common group for Internet Explorer 4.x users.
System Doctor: Changed files: sysdoc32.exe, sensor32.dll,
alarm.dll
Fixed a problem where the Rescue sensor remains
red after a Rescue update.
Fixed a problem where the Drive Optimization
sensor will report fragmentation levels on
Windows 98 Beta incorrectly.
Norton Disk Doctor: Changed file: NDD.EXE
Automated the Free Cluster Count fix on startup.
Fixed a problem where NDD could hang doing a
surface test on a FAT12 partition (a partition
under 20 megabytes, floppy, etc).
Norton Speed Disk: Changed file: <registry>
Added NTLDR (Windows NT boot loader) as an
unmovable file.
Norton Protection: Changed file:
Fixed a problem where the Norton Protected Recycle
Bin icon could vanish.
System Information: Changed file: SYSINFO.VXD
Fixed a problem where System Information could
erase a system's CMOS configuration during the
processor identification sequence on older
processors which didn't support a certain
instruction.
Other: Changed files:
Added the incremental version number to the Norton
Utilities About box.
Update #3 also contains the following changes from Update #2 (v3.02):
Optimization Wizard: Changed file: optwiz.exe
New file: regpatch.exe, badkey.ow, restreg.bat
Norton Optimization Wizard has been enhanced to
provide better detection of errors with the optimization
process and, if an error occurs, better recovery from
a corrupt registry.
If Optimization Wizard is unable to successfully
optimize the registry, a BADKEY.OW file is created
in the Windows directory that contains a list of
defective registry keys. The registry will not
be harmed.
Optimization Wizard also creates a
RESTREG.BAT file in the Windows directory that
will restore the registry to its pre-optimized
state.
Optimization Wizard now correctly optimizes
registries that have keys containing carriage
returns and line feeds.
Norton SpeedStart: Changed file: spdstart.vxd
Norton SpeedStart has been updated to solve a
deadlock problem with VirusScan.
All Utilities: Changed file: nusplash.dll
Fixed a compatibility problem with some Diamond
Multimedia video cards and current (as of
this writing) video drivers, which caused
Norton Utilities to GPF upon startup. The
workaround to this was to disable the splash
screens, but with this revision, the splash
screens now work with Diamond cards.
Zip Rescue: Changed file: iomega.vxd
Fixed a problem where new media in a Zip drive
was not being properly detected.
Readme.txt: Changed: readme.txt
Added a section containing information on the
Norton Optimization Wizard. Also added to the
general information / compatibility issues
section regarding America Online,
QEMM97/MagnaRAM, and CleanSweep 3.0.
Update #2 also contains the following changes from Update #1 (v3.01):
System Doctor: Changed file: sysdoc32.exe, sensor32.dll, alarm.dll
Fixed the additional alarm problem. Now, if
additional alarm conditions are triggered while an
alarm is displayed, the additional alarms will now
display after the first alarm is dismissed.
Speed Disk: Changed files: sd32.exe, sd32eng.dll
Fixed a rare problem where Speed Disk could fail
on Drivespace2 or Drivespace3 volumes if the
system was under heavy I/O stress.
Zip Rescue: Changed files: iomega.vxd, nursc.dll, rescue32.exe,
ziprecvr.exe, runreged.exe
Fixed a memory allocation error when dealing with
massive registries.
Fixed a problem where Zip Rescue would format a
5.25" floppy disk as if it were a 3.5" disk. Since
Zip Rescue does not support 5.25" floppy disks,
an error message now displays.
To save space on the Zip Rescue disk, the list of files
required to be saved to the disk has been trimmed.
Fixed the problem that Zip disks could be made
unformattable and unusable on certain Zip drives. The
fix is accomplished by using the latest IoMega drivers,
(iomega.vxd), but this update installs them for you.
